The Demon Headmaster

With the summer holidays approaching Oakengates Theatre once again opens its doors to the Youth Summer Project. Every year we welcome up to 80 young people aged eight to twenty-one who work with professionals to produce a musical theatre show in just two weeks. This year the chosen show is The Demon Headmaster, a new production based on the children’s book by Gillian Cross which was also made into a sucessful TV series.

The summer youth project, now in its twenty-second year, is a fun and rewarding holiday activity which provides great value for money and an exciting and rewarding experience for the young people taking part.

Our Director, Musical Director and Choregrapher are carefully selected individuals with the experience and skills to bring out the best in the participants. Over the years we've seen youngsters who were timid and shy on Day One confidently performing show-stopping numbers to a full house at the end of the project.

We're delighted to welcome back director Richard Hull who has a wealth of experience directing young people’s theatre. He says: “The benefits of the youth summer project are many and far-reaching. Participants develop their social, language, musical and memory skills; they develop their individual talents while working as part of a team; and they learn skills relating to all aspects of theatre production.”

At the end of the project the youth summer production never fails to impress audiences with a high-quality professional-looking show. It’s always a real pleasure to see the young people’s hard work pay off, and even more exciting to witness the incredible talent we have here in Telford. The production is a completely home-grown affair and something for us all to be very proud of.

While many of the young people taking part have an interest in performing and are members of youth theatre groups, experience is not necessary and many join simply for the joy of trying something new in a safe and structured environment.

But you never know - you might witness a career in the making. Lucy Pollard, who charmed audiences as Cinderella in last year’s Christmas pantomime, had performed in Seussical the Musical, the theatre’s 2010 summer youth project. A star from Telford is born!
