TV Star Paul is new lead in A Night Of Dirty Dancing

Winner of ITV’s iconic Stars in Their Eyes, Paul Doody, is announced this week as the new male lead in the eagerly-awaited A Night of Dirty Dancing stage show.
Paul’s famous portrayal of Wet Wet Wet’s lead singer Marti Pellow was seen by a TV audience of 12 million and attracted a staggering 178,000 votes from viewers. Described by TV presenter Chris Evans as possessing a “superb voice” and being a “brilliant vocalist”, Paul’s other TV appearances include This Morning, All Rise with Julian Clary and GMTV.
“Supported by a cast that includes West End performers and stars of a host of hit touring productions,” says show producer Michael Taylor, “A Night of Dirty Dancing is a talent-packed production containing real star quality.”
Indeed, the hit show’s previous male lead Ben Forster this year won TV’s Superstar and leaves to concentrate on appearing in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
His former co-star, leading lady in A Night of Dirty Dancing Louise Kenny, says that the A Night of Dirty Dancing touring production has built a superb reputation during nine years of smash-hit productions. It now draws upon an all-star roster of 26 West End performers.
“We’re thrilled for Ben,” she says. “He’s a phenomenal singer and it’s been a joy to work with him on A Night of Dirty Dancing. His replacement Paul’s vocals are legendary and it’s exciting to be working opposite him in the lead role.”
In wishing Ben every success with Jesus Christ Superstar, Michael Taylor says that Paul is a worthy successor in A Night of Dirty Dancing.
“Faces change,” says Michael, “Ben only became a feature of our production this year.”
Michael puts the show’s success down to its content: “A Night of Dirty Dancing isn’t simply a superbly-choreographed tribute to the greatest dance movie of all time,” he says. “It’s a celebration of a moment in time on which the world looks back fondly.”
In addition to all the hits from the film – She’s Like the Wind, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Hey Baby, Wipeout, Do You Love Me, Be My Baby, Hungry Eyes and, of course, the Oscar-winning (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life – there’s also a touching tribute to star of the film Patrick Swayze. This includes a medley of hit songs from Patrick’s many box office hits.
Unchained Melody from the film Ghost and Mad World from Donnie Darko are just two of the songs performed. Also, the Hula Song from Dirty Dancing leads into a stunning three-part harmony featuring songs like Candy Man and Sing, Sing, Sing.
“No other show features the variety of songs offered by A Night of Dirty Dancing,” says Michael. “It’s such an uplifting, up-tempo, feel-good production there’s no surprise our multi-talented performers are being plucked for super stardom.”
Not the West End and touring musical, but the brand-new sensational, inspirational, aspirational box office smash hit concert show of the year.
